The First Graphic Novel chosen for a Hamilton-Wenham Library Community Read!

A note from Jan Dempsey, Library Director

Dear Friends:

We cordially invite you all to join us as we celebrate our first graphic novel community read!

We have two programs coming up next week:

Our Keynote Speaker is Dwight Jon Zimmerman, author of THE HAMMER AND THE ANVIL: FREDERICK DOUGLASS, ABRAHAM LINCOLN and the END OF SLAVERY IN AMERICA.The reception will take place at 6:30 PM on Thursday, November 7 at the Ken Olsen Science Center at Gordon College, 255 Grapevine Road, Wenham, MA  where the public can meet Mr. Zimmerman and have a delicious snack.  AT  7:30 PM, Mr. Zimmerman, acclaimed military expert, award-winning author and radio show host will speak about his research, his writing, and why he chose the graphic novel format. Copies of his books, THE HAMMER AND THE ANVIL and THE VIETNAM WAR: A GRAPHIC HISTORY will be for sale.

On Tuesday, November 5 at 7:00 PM Montserrat College of Art professors Adam Miller and Blyth Hazen will present a brief history of comics and graphic novels.  They will bring their own work, and discuss artistic styles and subgenres of the this growing and evolving art/literary form, and have time for questions and answers about how to develop a graphic novel from idea to finished product.  This program takes place at the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library, 14 Union Street, Hamilton, MA in our downstairs large meeting room.

We are very excited about these two programs which relate to our grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute celebrating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Civil War.

If you have any questions, please give me a call and we hope to see you!
